The first time I heard the phrase “don’t confuse me with facts, my mind’s made up,” I thought the person who said it was joking. I don’t remember the subject of the conversation – and, at the time, I didn’t understand that I was challenging a crucial tacit assumption of his belief system, but I was. When I realized that the person was serious, I was well and truly gobsmacked. I don’t remember having heard that specific phrase since then, but in other words and actions I have come to see it everywhere.

To me, this is a real threat to our society. People who do not think for themselves and are willing to knowingly lie to themselves in order to avoid having to face challenges to their beliefs are sitting ducks for manipulation. They are guaranteed to never learn anything that will change their world view. Worse yet, they are willing participants in their own maniuplation. Daniel Patrick Moynihan once said: “Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts.” These people simply ignore facts that conflict with their opinions.

The purpose of this blog is call attention to the more blatant examples of “dcmwfmmmu” in the political, religious and policy-making arenas and to allow myself the occasional rant . . .
